About Emmen

Emmen is a town where history feels closely connected to the landscapes of the Dutch northeast,
shaped by its rural roots, peatland heritage,
and the wide open spaces of Drenthe.

It developed from a collection of farming and peat-working communities,
where life for centuries revolved around agriculture
and the extraction of peat from the surrounding moors.
For generations, canals and rural trade routes linked the region,
gradually supporting the town’s growth and modernization.
Today, traces of this past remain alongside contemporary districts
and cultural attractions such as Wildlands Adventure Zoo,
set within spacious green surroundings.
Few places in the Netherlands combine rural heritage and modern development so openly.

Modern Emmen blends this history with a relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere.
Its parks, forests, and cycling routes offer outdoor recreation,
walking, and access to the surrounding countryside,
giving the town a calm, expansive feel.
Community events, cultural venues,
and a practical yet welcoming center add to its appeal.

Emmen is a place where rural traditions meet green modern living,
where open landscapes sit beside contemporary neighborhoods
and cafés, and where everyday life moves at a comfortable pace.
